What is an Occupational Therapist?
An occupational therapist (OT) helps people do the everyday things they need and want to do — more easily, more safely, and more independently. The word "occupation" throws a lot of people: it doesn't mean your job, but any meaningful activity that fills your time and matters to you — getting dressed, cooking a meal, playing with your kids, catching the bus, or managing your own home. OTs are university-qualified allied health practitioners who take a whole-picture view of the physical, social, emotional and environmental factors that shape people's lives. Whether it's a child learning to hold a pencil, an adult returning to life after injury, or an older person staying confident at home, an OT works alongside you — starting with the goals that matter most to you, and building support around them.
Occupational therapy, explained.
There's some overlap, but the focus differs. Physiotherapists generally concentrate on movement, strength and physical function. Occupational therapists take a broader view — looking at how physical, sensory, emotional and environmental factors all come together to affect the everyday activities you want to do. Many people benefit from seeing both.
OTs support people across the whole lifespan — from young children finding their feet, to adults building independence, to older Australians wanting to stay safe and connected at home. At WHR, our OTs work with children, NDIS participants, older Australians, and anyone else who could benefit from support to live life more fully.
For many of our services, no referral is needed — individuals and families can get in touch directly. Some funding pathways, like a Medicare care plan, do require a GP referral. If you're not sure, our team is happy to talk it through.
There are several pathways, including NDIS funding, a Medicare care plan, aged care funding, or privately. We can help you work out which one fits your situation — just reach out and we'll point you in the right direction.
Wherever it's most useful for you. That might be in your own home, in your community, at school, or at one of our clinics in Torquay or Albury. Seeing someone in their own environment often makes therapy more practical and effective.
